About Paper IO
Paper.io is a free territory-capture game in which you steer a coloured block around an arena, drawing a trail behind you and claiming everything you enclose when you return to your own territory. Other players are doing the same, and anyone who touches your trail while it is still open destroys you instantly.
The risk is entirely self-imposed. While you are inside your own territory you are untouchable; the moment you leave it, the line behind you is a live wire that any opponent can cut. Small, frequent loops are safe but slow, while a long expedition across the map can double your territory in one pass — and lose everything if someone intercepts you on the way home.
Attacking works the same way in reverse. Cutting an opponent's trail eliminates them and frees up whatever they held, so the strongest players spend as much time hunting careless expansions as they do expanding themselves. Late in a round the map compresses into a few large territories with short borders, and the game turns into a series of quick raids across a neighbour's line rather than open-field expansion.
How to play Paper IO
Steer your block around the arena. Leaving your territory starts drawing a trail; returning to your own colour fills in everything the trail enclosed. Touch an opponent's trail to eliminate them. Do not let anyone touch yours, and never cross your own line, which also ends your run.
Tips and strategy
- Make shallow, wide loops rather than deep narrow ones. The area captured grows with width, and you spend less time exposed.
- Always know your route home. The most common death is a player who commits to a long capture and then has to cross an opponent to get back.
- Hunt players who have just left their base. They are furthest from safety at that moment and their trail is longest.
- When your territory borders the map edge, expand along it — the edge cannot be attacked from behind, so half your perimeter is automatically safe.
