About Google Snake
Google Snake is a free version of the classic arcade game in which you steer a growing snake around a walled grid, eating apples to extend its length. Every apple makes the snake longer and the board more cramped, and the run ends the moment you collide with a wall or with any part of your own tail.
Snake is a game about future space rather than present danger. Early on the board is almost empty and you can chase apples directly; by the time the snake is fifty segments long, the direct route is usually a trap that seals you into a pocket you cannot escape. Strong players stop chasing apples at all and instead maintain a pattern — usually a boustrophedon sweep up and down the board — that guarantees they always have a path back to their own tail.
The snake's tail moves as well as its head, which is the detail that makes high scores possible: a gap that is blocked now may be open by the time you reach it. Reading that timing correctly is the difference between a fifty-point game and a board-filling one.
How to play Google Snake
Steer the snake with the arrow keys. It moves continuously and cannot stop or reverse into itself. Eat each apple that appears to grow one segment longer and score a point. Avoid running into the outer walls or into any part of your own body — either ends the game immediately.
Tips and strategy
- Once the snake is long, stop taking the direct route to apples and follow a repeating up-and-down sweep of the board instead.
- Always leave yourself a route back to your own tail. If you can reach your tail, you can survive indefinitely.
- Use the edges. Running along a wall costs you no extra space and keeps the middle of the board open for manoeuvring.
- Remember the tail moves too — a gap that looks sealed will often be open by the time your head arrives.
